
Professor Richard Carey Smith is a leading orthopaedic and oncology surgeon, specialising in bone and soft tissue tumours, complex limb reconstruction, joint replacement, and osseointegration surgery.
His academic and clinical background is outstanding: he earned a scholarship at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School, London, and completed degrees in exercise physiology, medicine, and surgery — receiving prizes in anatomy, physiology, endocrinology, histology, pathology, and gynaecology.
Professor Carey Smith underwent UK fellowship training on the Cambridge rotation, and during his time in Norwich was awarded the Carlile Medal for research into accelerated rehabilitation following knee replacements.
He further broadened his expertise with international fellowships: in adult reconstruction and oncology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver; trauma fellowship at the Rocky Mountain Trauma Centre in Denver; and sports knee surgery with Mr Tim Spalding at the University Hospital Coventry & Warwick
As Medical Director of PlusLife, Professor Carey Smith contributes to the supply and preparation of donor bone and tissue allografts to support surgical procedures — reflecting his commitment to advancing patient care through innovation and collaboration.
He serves as Clinical Lead for the State Sarcoma Service in Western Australia, holds leadership roles within national and international orthopaedic and sarcoma organisations (including chairing the sarcoma specialty group of the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) / Australia and New Zealand Sarcoma Association (ANZSA)), acts as an Examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) Orthopaedic trainees, and contributes as a reviewer for leading surgical journals.
Professor Carey Smith remains active in research and education with a broad range of peer-reviewed publications and regular presentations at national and international conferences.
